Memorial Day Traffic Guide
Plan ahead โ it's one of the busiest weekends of the yearDay 1 ยท Saturday May 23
101 South at 8am โ clear. Heading south early is your biggest advantage. Hwy 1 through Big Sur gets congested going south by midday โ you'll hit it at the right time. Biggest risk: northbound 101 after 5pm. Try to leave Big Sur by 5:30pm or you'll sit in Memorial Weekend return traffic. McWay Falls is your last stop โ time it right.
Day 2 ยท Sunday May 24 โ ๏ธ Worst day
Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz backs up by 9am on summer Sundays. Leave Santa Clara by 7:30am to get ahead of it. Henry Cowell parking lot fills by 10am on busy weekends โ arrive before 9am. Aรฑo Nuevo gets busy by early afternoon. Head home by 4pm to avoid the Sunday evening 17 crawl.
Day 3 ยท Monday May 25 (Memorial Day)
Morning into SF is surprisingly okay โ many people leave Sunday night. Golden Gate Bridge parking is nearly impossible โ use the Presidio lots and walk. Critical: leave SF by 3:30pm. Memorial Day afternoon on 101 is brutal. Every extra minute after 4pm adds 20 min to your drive home.

Monterey
Monterey
Cannery Row โ Coastal Walk
Stretch your legs with a 30-min walk along the Monterey waterfront. Cannery Row is scenic, historic, and much more local than SF's wharf. Watch the sea otters floating in the kelp just offshore โ no aquarium needed.
ParkingPark anywhere along Cannery Row โ metered street parking or the Cannery Row Garage at 75 Prescott Ave. Easy 30-min stop. Stay on the waterfront path.
10:30am
17-Mile Dr
17-Mile Dr
17-Mile Drive โ Pebble Beach
Enter at the Pacific Grove Gate and drive south. 20+ named stops โ Lone Cypress (the most photographed tree in North America), Bird Rock covered in pelicans and seals, Pebble Beach Golf Course, and dramatic rocky coves. Allow 1.5 hrs.
DrivingFrom Cannery Row head west on Ocean View Blvd to Pacific Grove Gate (on Sunset Dr). Exit at the Carmel Gate on the south end โ this drops you right into Carmel village. ~10 min from Monterey to gate.

1:30pm
Point Lobos
Point Lobos
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Sea otters in kelp forests. Harbor seals on the rocks. Turquoise coves. One of the most biodiverse marine areas on the planet. Walk the Sea Lion Point or Cypress Grove Trail โ both under 1 mile, both jaw-dropping.
DrivingHead south on Hwy 1 from Carmel, ~2 miles. Entrance on the right (west side). Pay at the gate. Parking fills by noon on holiday Saturdays โ if lot is full, roadside parking is allowed just outside on Hwy 1 shoulder.
3:00pm

DrivingContinue south on Hwy 1 ~7 miles from Point Lobos. No signage โ look for Gates 18 & 19 (pull-outs on the shoulder). Park on the shoulder. GPS: 36.4585ยฐ N, 121.9275ยฐ W is a good approximation.
4:15pm

McWay Falls
McWay Falls
McWay Falls โ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
The crown jewel of the day. An 80-ft waterfall dropping directly onto a turquoise beach cove that you can't reach โ making it somehow more magical. The overlook trail is only 0.7 miles round trip. Utterly surreal.

Driving~12 miles south of Bixby Bridge on Hwy 1. Well-signed. Park in the day-use lot east of highway. Cross the pedestrian tunnel under Hwy 1 to reach the falls trail. To go home: drive back north on Hwy 1 โ Hwy 68 E โ Hwy 101 N to Santa Clara. ~2 hrs home.
